Where to Go in Yeonnam-dong: Cafes, Food & a Park Date
For an easy Yeonnam-dong date, start at Hongik University Station Exit 3, walk through the Yeonnam section of Gyeongui Line Forest Park, then explore the side streets for coffee and dinner. Allow around three to four hours for a relaxed visit. You can enjoy the neighborhood without an attraction ticket; your main expenses will be food, drinks, shopping, and transport.
Yeonnam-dong (연남동) works especially well for travelers who prefer browsing to rushing between landmarks. Choose one cafe, leave time for a proper meal, and use the park as your starting point. Trying to fit five dessert stops into one afternoon usually means more queues than conversation.
Information checked against official tourism and Seoul city sources on October 15, 2026. Business hours, menus, and prices may change. Suggested spending amounts below are planning estimates, not venue quotes.
1. How to Get to Yeonnam-dong from Hongik University Station
Hongik University Station, also shown as Hongik Univ. or 홍대입구역, is the most practical starting point. It is served by Subway Line 2, the Gyeongui–Jungang Line, and the Airport Railroad.
Follow signs for Exit 3 to reach the Yeonnam side and the park entrance area. The station is large, so allow time to walk through its passages, particularly when arriving on the Airport Railroad.
- Coming from Myeongdong? Take Line 4 to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, then transfer to Line 2 toward Euljiro 4-ga and Hongik University. Check your journey in a transit app before departure.
- Coming from Incheon Airport? Use the Airport Railroad All-Stop Train for Hongik University. The Airport Railroad Express Train does not stop there.
- Already exploring Hongdae? Head toward the Exit 3 side of the station rather than assuming every Hongdae shopping street leads directly into Yeonnam-dong.
Seoul’s published adult subway base fare is ₩1,550 with a transport card for a standard base-fare journey. Longer trips and airport journeys cost more. A single-journey ticket has a different fare and requires a refundable deposit.
2. What to See Along Gyeongui Line Forest Park
Gyeongui Line Forest Park (경의선숲길) is a linear park created along a former railway corridor. The full park stretches beyond Yeonnam-dong, so you do not need to walk its entire length for this itinerary.
The Yeonnam section is often called Yeontral Park (연트럴파크). It is an urban neighborhood walk, with greenery, places to pause, and nearby businesses, rather than a woodland hike.
- Start with a short park stroll. Spend roughly 20–40 minutes walking and stopping for photos, depending on your pace.
- Explore a side street. Look for small shops selling stationery, accessories, design goods, or clothing. The appeal is browsing, rather than following a fixed shopping checklist.
- Return to the park between stops. It makes a useful reference point when the surrounding lanes start to look similar.
For a date, late afternoon gives you time for a daylight walk before dinner. Weekday visits are a sensible choice if you want a better chance of finding a quiet table. Weekend afternoons can be busy, especially around popular cafes.
Stay on open paths, follow signs around planted areas, and avoid blocking the walkway for photos. The lanes are also part of a lived-in neighborhood: keep voices down near homes and avoid photographing residents or private doorways.
3. Which Yeonnam-dong Cafes Should You Try?
Pick your cafe by what you want to eat or drink. A beautiful cake display, a focused coffee stop, and a long conversation do not always call for the same place. Two options listed by Seoul’s official tourism website make useful starting points.
- Café Layered Yeonnam (카페 레이어드 연남): choose this for scones, cakes, and a vintage, European-inspired interior. The official listing gives daily hours of 10:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m. Confirm the current schedule before making a special trip.
- Folv Yeonnam: consider this if drip coffee and pie sound more appealing than a large bakery selection. Its official listing places it at 32 Donggyo-ro 41-gil, Mapo-gu. Check the venue’s latest notice for hours and available desserts.
For budgeting, set aside approximately ₩6,000–₩9,000 per person for a cafe drink, with dessert extra. This is a flexible allowance for planning; specialty drinks and larger desserts can cost more.
- Check seating before ordering. Some places ask you to order first; others manage tables or queues separately.
- Check minimum orders. A cafe may require one drink per person even when you share a cake.
- Look for self-service signs. You may collect your order at the counter and return the tray when leaving.
- Ask about ingredients. Cakes and scones commonly contain wheat, milk, or eggs; some also contain nuts. A plant-based drink does not make the dessert vegan.

4. Where to Eat and What to Know Before Ordering
Yeonnam-dong is not limited to traditional Korean food. You can build your visit around Korean cooking, international restaurants, or a simple meal between cafe stops. Start with your appetite and dietary needs rather than choosing the longest queue.
Palgyejip (팔계집) is one Korean option listed by Visit Seoul. Its menu description includes flash-frozen pork belly, pot-cooked rice, and stews, with a hanok-inspired interior. It may suit a date when you want a substantial meal after walking.
Pork belly, or samgyeopsal (삼겹살), is rich and fatty, with browned edges when grilled. The meat itself may be mild, while sauces and stews can add chili heat. Ask which dishes are cooked at the table, whether staff help with grilling, and how many portions you must order.
- Check whether prices are per serving. A barbecue price beside a meat weight usually refers to that portion, not an unlimited meal.
- Confirm extras. Rice, stew, drinks, and additional meat may be separate.
- Check the waiting system. Some restaurants use a kiosk, an app, or a phone number. If you cannot register with an overseas number, ask staff.
- Ask about break time and last orders. A restaurant can stop accepting orders before its posted closing time.

Vegetarian or vegan? Ask about the entire recipe. Broth, kimchi, and sauces can contain meat, anchovy stock, fish sauce, or salted shrimp. Removing visible meat does not make a dish vegetarian. For halal requirements, confirm ingredients and preparation; a pork-serving barbecue restaurant will not suit every traveler.
If you have a food allergy, name the exact ingredient and explain any need to avoid shared equipment. A Korean allergy card is useful. If the kitchen cannot confirm safe preparation, choose another restaurant.
5. A Relaxed Date Itinerary and How Much to Budget
This suggested afternoon leaves room to change plans if a cafe is full or a restaurant has a long wait. The times are an itinerary example, not business opening times.
- 3:00 p.m. — Meet at Exit 3. Agree on a precise meeting point outside the station, then start with the park.
- 3:30 p.m. — Browse the side streets. Explore a few shops without committing to a long detour.
- 4:00 p.m. — Stop for coffee. Choose one cafe and share a dessert if the ordering policy allows it.
- 5:30 p.m. — Have an early dinner. Check the queue, menu, and minimum order before settling on a venue.
- After dinner — Take a short final walk. Return toward the station or continue into Hongdae if you want a livelier evening.
A sample budget for two: allow ₩16,000 for two drinks, ₩10,000 for a shared dessert, and ₩44,000 for dinner. That totals ₩70,000 for two people, before transport, alcohol, and shopping. These are sample spending choices, not quoted prices from the businesses above. Barbecue, premium desserts, or a second cafe can raise the total.
To spend less, keep the park walk as your main activity, choose a simpler meal, and skip a second dessert stop. Walking through the public park itself does not require an admission ticket.
- Bring comfortable shoes and a charged phone. Save Korean place names and addresses for easier navigation.
- Prepare for the weather. Bring an umbrella in wet weather and a suitable layer for a cool evening. Check heat and air-quality conditions before a long outdoor visit.
- Keep an indoor backup. On a rainy day, shorten the park walk and choose a cafe and restaurant close together.
- Check access requirements. Small businesses may have stairs or narrow entrances. Confirm step-free access directly if you need it.
- Plan your return journey. Check the final train for your actual destination; last-train times differ by line and direction.
Yeonnam-dong is easiest to enjoy at a slow pace: a park walk, one cafe you genuinely want to try, and a meal that suits your budget. Start at Exit 3, keep your route flexible, and leave enough time to enjoy the neighborhood between stops.
